This picture book concerns a huge machine-like thing found on a beach by a young child. Thematically, author Shaun Tan explores notions of difference and belonging, conformity and creativity, humanity and mechanisation.
Artistically, he uses the collage effect of pasting text and painting over a background of pages from physics and engineering textbooks.
His artwork acknowledges the influence of Jeffrey Smart, Edward Hopper and John Brack, resulting in a masterly picture book to be appreciated on many levels.
