Born in 1930, Paul Wheelan, creator of The Raven, centred his comic book series around the enigmatic Seventh Earl of Ravenscourt.
Framed by his evil brother Sebastian for the theft of priceless art works, and sentenced to Dartmoor Prison, the Earl escapes to his ancestral home in the south of England. Guided by a sleek black raven, he discovers a hidden chamber containing the mysterious garb of an ancestor. From that point on, he dedicates his life to avenging the wrongly accused.
Stylistically, The Raven makes use of the gothic atmospherics found in the horror stories of Edgar Allan Poe.
Wheelan's primary intention was to poke fun at the imperiousness of the British elite; he ended up with a winning storytelling formula which resulted in a loyal readership.
