The Arrival, published by Lothian Books, is ShaunTan’s first graphic novel and is a poignant and universal tale about a man’s journey from his homeland to a new and strange land.
Comprising hundreds of drawings and no text, it is like a silent movie in which the visual transcends language. Tan has written of this approach, ‘My interest as an artist has been to dislocate the reader in order to better explore the idea of being an immigrant within a foreign culture.’
33 year-old Shaun Tan is the author and illustrator of a number of award-winning picture books including The Lost Thing and The Red Tree.
