Popular Culture

Popular culture is, by definition, the culture of the people. Celebrating mass appeal, pop culture draws from and, in turn, influences the arts and the media.

Popular culture has also influenced and, in turn, been influenced by books. Foreshadowed by 19th century 'penny dreadfuls', pulp fiction novels were popular not only because of their cheap price, but their sensational content and highly graphic covers.

Comics took the ideas of justice and male heroism from pulp novels, reinterpreting them to create detective comics, superheroes and more.

Recently, graphic novels have emerged, using the mass appeal of the comics form to explore new subjects and themes.
