The term ‘zine’ is used to refer to publications which are produced independently as alternatives to mainstream magazine culture.
Generally low budget and distributed through specialist networks, zines have emerged as a popular medium for personal expression about a wide variety of topics. These are as diverse as music, politics, poetry and television.
In recent years, the more traditional format of the photocopied and stapled zine has been joined by ‘e-zines’, online versions which take advantage of the opportunities for self-publishing made possible by the internet.
